LINK Project Proposal
For my LINK internship I plan to intern with Allison Ragsdale Photography. They are a photographic organization based solely on portrait photography. Their mission is to supply the community with a high quality photography business that meets the needs and expectations of the consumer. Their role in the community is to be available as a private portrait photographer for shoots at special events and in the studio.
My mentor is Allison Ragsdale. Her role is running the organization; she is in charge of all photographic shoots and business transactions. I feel that she will be a very strong advocate in teaching me many new things about portrait photography and post-processing of the photos.
Through my internship I hope to gain new insight on professional portrait photography in general. Mt internship does not necessarily pertain to my long-term career goals but it will help me grow as a photographer and add to my overall skills, which I can apply to my school newspaper and my personal endeavors as a photographer.
During my internship I want to put together a photo portfolio representing the skills that I learned and the areas of photography I improved in. After talking with my mentor about this project idea she seems very enthusiastic and thinks that it will be a fantastic portrayal of the work I do over the course of my internship. After reflecting back on the work I do and presenting my project through the LINK internship the community and the organization that I am interning at will be able to see how strong my skills are and how they can be applied to a business to produce a stronger community and economy. When I complete this project I want to walk away with new portrait photography skills that I can apply to the work I do in Journalism class and my own personal photography projects.
Before my internship I want to complete some research goals in order to be more prepared for my internship. I want to read a few articles that pertain to photography and business as well as articles on portrait and studio photography in general. I also want to practice some portrait photography to have a better idea of what I will be doing in my internship. I want to do all this preparation to be able to be more open to learning new complex forms of photography and photo editing. Right now I do not have a whole lot of knowledge on portrait photography so doing a lot of research is going to be very beneficial.
To be prepared for the LINK exhibition I need to have a prime focus on completing my project during my internship. I want to know exactly what kind and how many photos will be part of my portfolio at exhibition. At the exhibition I hope to have on display both a computer slideshow and some actual prints of my work. I already have in possession all the materials I need for exhibition and the studio at my internship has all the tools needed for creating the photos for my portfolio. In the exhibition I also will want to bring some of my photo gear to show what I was working with over the course of my internship. To ensure that I will complete my project by the end of my internship I will need to schedule deadlines for the specific steps I will take for my project.
I originally was set on interning with the Durango Herald but due to some communication issues it unfortunately fell through. This was definitely not an issue with Allison Ragsdale; with Allison I was able to get in contact with her right away and easily setup an interview without any hassle. Through this experience I learned that despite your intentions on having a specific internship it may not always go as planned. I handled this situation by staying focused on obtaining an internship in a timely matter and was able to contact Allison and setup an interview very quickly.
Right now I am feeling very good about my internship. I have heard very good things about Allison and after meeting with her I think that I am going to have a fun and fulfilling internship with her. I am very excited and am looking forward to working at Allison Ragsdale Photography for my internship.
